What I have for you to consider today is our Native Minnesota Choke Cherry Tree/Shrub. This Choke Cherry is SO EASY TO GROW and is absolutely a wonderful shrub for your yards as specimen plantings (grown as a tree or a shrub!) OR to incorporate into your windbreak, privacy border OR just to plant for the fruit it produces…..for your family to eat OR the birds! The fruit from these Choke Cherries is highly prized for making your own syrup and/or jam….. is absolutely DELICIOUS and very high in nutrients!
I have these lovely trees/shrubs available right now for $60 each or 5 for $285. They are in that 3 to 4 foot size group and they ARE potted…..so planting is a snap! We also pot in REAL Dirt, and as always, totally organically grown!
CHOKE CHERRY: This lovely TREE/SHRUB should be in everyone’s yard for sure! The fruit from this tree is prized for making jams and syrups (which I do every year). I got tired of driving up and down the gravel roads looking for these roadside fruit treasures (which by the way found out later were being SPRAYED by the county to get rid of them> now that’s a day spoiler!!!!) Anyway, I planted some on my own place for my family and birdies to enjoy> spray and poison free! Legally technically they are classified as a small TREE, but I like to treat them more like a shrub. When I plant I always leave the bottom branches to bush out, thus providing more reachable height for the fruit when picked. You can have them either way for your yard, tall like a tree, or trim for a more bushy planting. The birds prize these fruits if you’re a birdie person like we are! For the size of these Chokecherries, you can expect about 20 foot tall in height and about 10 wide. They will also do very well in full sun to part shade conditions…..so 4 to 6 hours of full sun would be great. They are not picky about their soil conditions either, and will adapt to a variety of soil types, as well as showing very good drought resistance. Basically speaking, this Native Minnesota tree/shrub is just plain tough as nails, and should not be overlooked to plant-enjoy-harvest for your permaculture project or just have planted at your homestead to feed your family. Chokecherries are also very valuable within your nutrition. They provide vitamins C, K, and B6, are high in fiber and antioxidants, as well as being a great source of valuable minerals..... manganese and potassium!
