I have not had train tracks set up in the past to use. I got a transformer at the same time and it made a sound when I hooked up wires to the track, but it did not make the engine move. There were 4 spots to connect the transformer and I was not sure if they did them correct. The engine may still work the way it is, but I do not know for sure, so it is being sold as it is.
